Portrait Commissioning
A portrait is a unique way of capturing the essence of someone’s personality. It can also be a very special gift, treasured possession and future heirloom. The task of commissioning a portrait can seem quite frightening to someone who has never had their portrait created before, but it is really quite easy if you take the time to prepare and build an effective creative relationship with the portrait artist of your choice.
The first thing you have to do is realise that, depending on the medium used, the lead time could range from an hour or so to a year or more – much more in the case of famous portrait artists. The price will also vary enormously. The best thing to do is just to do a search on ‘portrait artist’ on Google and review the portrait artists’ portfolios that come up to get feel for the media and style of portrait that most appeal to you. Graphite pencil and pastels generally cost least with oils far and away the most expensive medium.
The artists should list their requirements, including whether or not they need sittings and whether these should take place at their studio. Where the artist is remote, they will normally expect to be reimbursed the expense of travel and accommodation. You may have to travel to their studio for the sitting. If the prospect of sittings takes away the element of surprise, you can still surprise the recipient by giving them the entire creative process leading to the creation of their portrait. Alternatively you can choose an artist who works from photographs.
It is essential to establish a relationship of mutual respect with the portraitist of your choice from the beginning. One of the best ways to establish a great relationship is to put both of your expectations into a written contract. You will also almost certainly be expected to pay a deposit which could be between a quarter and a half of the price of the finished work. This may sound like a high percentage, but the portrait, unlike original work, will have no value to another customer. With larger, more expensive works, the artist may request stage payments. Most artists will expect to retain the copyright of the image, but this can be negotiated. It is more common for the artist to sell you giclee prints of the original image which you can give to friends or relatives.
Where photographs are to be used, these need to be of good quality. It may be necessary to have these taken professionally. A good artist will want you involved every step of the way and to sign off on each change as it is requested. This is because it can be very difficult or, with some media, even impossible to make changes to later in the process. On the other hand, if the medium permits changes, these can be time consuming and expensive – perhaps to the point of creating a complete new portrait. Effective communication and a great relationship will prevent any such problems. The bond you forge with the artist can last a lifetime and a whole series of portraits.
Other considerations include how the finished portrait will be packed and shipped, how it will be framed and even where it will be hung. There is no point in having a large, multi subject portrait commissioned if the recipient has nowhere to hang it. On the other hand a small portrait can fit into an empty niche in a special place in any home. Great progress has been made in lightfast pigments, but it is never a good idea to hang a portrait in direct sunlight.
If you follow the process and build the relationship, having a portrait created can be a wonderful and rewarding experience and will create something that you or the recipient will treasure for the rest of your lives.
