Where To Explore In Wiltshire From Your Salisbury Hotel
From your Salisbury hotel, where are the best places to visit for the day? Within Salisbury itself there’s the cathedral and the surrounding close. The spire is pretty impressive at 404 feet tall and the interior is beautiful. Walk from the cathedral to Elizabeth Gardens where you can see the vantage point that John Constable painted the cathedral from. Continue down the Town Path past the water meadows and stop for a quick drink at The Old Mill pub.
Heading back into town, you can visit the Fisherton Mill just off Fisherton Street to discover the work of local artists and grab a great lunch. The building was built as a grain mill in 1880 but is now the South of England’s largest independent art gallery. Upstairs you will find exhibitions of paintings and some of the resident artists such as photographer Kin Ho and garden designer Catherine Thomas.
A bit further out of town, near the town of Amesbury, is the world heritage site of Stonehenge. These ancient stones attract visitors from all over the world. Buses run direct from Salisbury train station, making them easy to get too and an audio tour is available when you get to the site which recaps on what we know about the history of the stones and the theories as to why they exist.
If you have access to a car, try heading out further to the West of Salisbury to the town of Westbury and see the famous white horse in the hillside. This horse is one of about eight that can be seen in Wiltshire. By car, the trip from Amesbury to Westbury should take about 40 minutes.
Drive back through the attractive village of Teffont where many of the rubble stone houses are grade II listed. While most of the listed buildings are private properties, some can be accessed, such as the Church of St Michael and All Angels. It has Welsh slate tiles on the roof and fishscale tiles in the aisle and chapel. Stone griffins holding shields can also be seen.
Passing back through Wilton, stop off at the stunning Wilton House and gardens where you will find a beautiful Palladian bridge and a beautiful double cube room, before finally heading back to base in Salisbury.
Accommodation Salisbury is easy to find and there are plenty of nice Salisbury hotels, so you will quickly have a place from which to start exploring the city and surrounding area.
