Beach Cottage Decor With Appeal
Beach home decorating can mean a lot of different things depending on which coast is being discussed. Each one from Florida to Maine and out to California all have their own ideas as to what the properly decorated home should look like. There are, however, basic guidelines that run throughout each of the regional styles that can aid in creating the look desired for the area the home is in.
The colors inherent in most coastal areas are white, blue, green, and brown with varying shades of each. These colors add a cool, relaxed feeling to any room. They can be combined as desired and used throughout the home for the feeling that each room flows to the next.
Using light colors on the walls of rooms will lend the home an airy look. Some prefer stark white walls throughout, but that is not necessary. While a neutral color, white can lend an institutional look to the home, so that should be kept in mind when envision your tropical decorating style. Whatever color is chosen, it can always be painted over if it doesn’t come out as desired. However, making the right color choice from the start is recommended.
The furniture will make the look of the room, so choose carefully. If the room will be lived in quite a bit, select comfortable furniture. All pieces do not need to come from the same furniture line, but make sure that each piece matches the next. The colors within the furniture’s fabric should also coordinate with the walls and floors. Everything should blend together as if they were all created to go specifically with each other.
For a nautical-themed room, stripes are the fabric of choice. However, keep the stripes sparse in order to prevent the room from feeling cluttered. When overdoing it with this style of furniture, the room can easily get the appearance of being too busy.
Windows are not routinely covered when decorating this way but if it becomes necessary to do so, keep it to a minimum. Bamboo or rattan blinds are the preferred covering for windows along with drop down linen blinds of either a white or other light color. The floors should be accented with sea grass or palm thatched rugs that can be easily cleaned and maintained.
Potted plants add a nice touch to any coastal-themed room. Plants in the palm family provide that beach-like feeling. Simply flowering plants such as orchids also add a nice touch when placed in the proper lighting. Designer magazines frequently showcase cattails in a large jar in many featured homes. Garden stores can recommend additional foliage that will look appropriate and follow the coastal theme.
The room accents can include virtually anything nautical such as a ship’s wheel, model boats or even an anchor, provided there is space. Tropical decor ideas and suggestions may be found by going online and conducting a brief search.
