El Siglo de Oro or Spain’s Golden Age was when most of Spain’s greatest artists appeared; they have composed some of the most extraordinary paintings in the world. This master became admired and reknowned in many parts of the world and could be regarded as one of the most famous if not the most famous Spanish painters of all time—Diego Velasquez. He was known to be good friends with King Philip IV and his chief minister, as he was acclaimed by his pieces, showcasing his talents and style in every portrait he has done.
Diego Velasquez was born in June 5, 1599 in Seville and he is the eldest of six children and came from a family of average class. It’s quite amazing that this painter’s skill was discovered so early, and that because of this he was able to gain a lesson in the workshop of Francisco Pacheco when he was but eleven years old. Eventually, Diego Velasquez fell in love with and married his master’s daughter and for a while, he earned money by creating paintings with religious themes which he sold to churches; he also made paintings for taverns, and offered his services as a portraitist.
Diego Velasquez’s career was marked by impressive and one of a kind artworks, pegging him as one of the country’s most celebrated painters. Upon meeting Marques de Spinola, he made one of his popular works titled Surrender of Breda which presents the victory of Spinola; when Spinola saw the painting he was in awe of Velasquez’ talent and how brilliant he was as a painter, extraordinarily capturing emotion through the realism in his portraits. However, Diego will continue to paint and he would create an artwork that would be more famous and more brilliant than the Surrender of Breda, he will be widely known for his piece called Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; The painting is said to be the most visited piece in the world and until now most people visit Spain just to see this wonderful work of art.
