Having a Better Understanding of Flamenco as a Cultural Performance
Considered as a primary form of art, music employs sound as its medium; harmony, rhythm, tempo, pitch, and melody are fundamentals of music. In each country and in every culture, music presents an important role in society; it is used a variety of purposes such as traditions, religious acts, entertainment and a whole lot more.
Spain is a country rich with many types of music, as extraordinary as the different types of architecture, paintings, and sculptures that they have accumulated over the years. After that, the Visigoths, an East Germanic tribe, and then the Jews came followed by the Moors; these influences from varying countries developed to Spain’s diverse musical style and form. It would be much more interesting to study the history of Spain by studying its language; basic Spanish is a great way to start and this can be easily done by starting off with basic lessons from sites like Rocket Spanish. A well-known music that’s from Spain is Flamenco which several people believe is widely known in all of Spain. It’s so popular that a lot of people even believe that it is Spain’s national dance form; it has come to the point that when people speak of Spain, they probably have Flamenco in mind as well. Because Spain’s music has been influenced by different countries, their music is unique from region to region.
Flamenco, an Andalusian traditional folk music, has three divisions; one is cante or song, the baile or dance and the guitarra or guitar. The Flamenco’s fast, sweeping steps and quick foot work has been adapted by many dance cultures worldwide. It’s surprising that very little is researched about the beginnings of this popular type of dance.
Andalusia was one of the poorest, most ignored locations in Spain during the generation when Flamenco first made its popularity in the country. In fact, the influences of Flamenco is still under debate until today; what is quite obvious and is something most researchers will agree about, is that the music and dance form looks like it has been heavily affected by Gypsy music. During the period when Flamenco first became a music and dance form in Spain, Gypsies had a bad reputation all over the world; Spain was no exception in that during those times, Gypsies were persecuted and marginalized. Another significant reason in adding to the difficulty in the study of the origin of Flamenco is that the number of people who danced it were illiterate and did not know how to write so they maintained the music and culture through oral tradition, and to make matters worse they were being persecuted during the Spanish inquisition in 1492.
Until today, much of the history of the Flamenco is still kept hidden. Nonetheless, no one can deny that Flamenco has played a big influence on the dance style all across the world.
