A local resident from Bridgewater has captured the glory of Shenandoah Valley more than once on canvas. She has painted for 36 years now, and the reason for her carrying easel and oils to mountain ridges and cornfields isn’t just to paint nature itself. She explains that the black and white colors from the clippings are a way for her to paint in an old fashioned way. She continues; many a times she cuts out pictures of animals and things that could be later added to her scene. According to her, the 15 by 4 ft mural on her family room is a result of just a newspaper photograph of two millstones, which she holds up while telling the story. The rustic scene of the millhouse and the grey mill wheels perfectly complement one another, and the riverbank.
The artist gives emphasis to the large mural on her wall about how she uses the pictures to add small details to her work, such as wood land animals, farm equipment and crops, and weatherboard buildings. She just uses water. Water is not hard to paint with, because it is volatile.
She has plans of beginning another painting about a snow scene, like in the newspaper cut out that she displayed. Snow is quite fast to do and easy to paint. The mural and one or two more other smaller scenes are the only paintings the artist has in her home. Apparently, the rest of her countless paintings are either sold or given away. Many a times her paintings are sold to customers of a furniture store in Maryland. When somebody, like a neighbor or a friend asks for her to paint, she does it willingly. The artist is so busy with too many orders coming from all directions. But she gets even more when it’s the Christmas season.
A nice old lady from the neighborhood gave her painting lessons when she was 13, in their home in Rockingham County, Green mount section. Each afternoon, she would pay 25 cents for a lesson. Her mother made a small lightweight pallet using a drill and paring knife a long time ago, and she showed it. There is a little note about how it was made on the old pallet, which is smeared with paint.
Some six years ago, their church was brought down, but she was able to keep some of the keepsakes on the family room of their house. A wall in one face of the room is made entirely of glass, and as the sun light filters through, they could see the river by their house. According to the artist, the glass was used in order to allow the natural outdoors inside the house.
There seemed to be something missing when she was painting the mural. Because the children didn’t like the way the tithe painting shows fall’s bright foliage in reds, gold and rusts, she had to redo the painting three quarters through completion. To give full emphasis on the mural, which tells people about all her love for painting, she decided to never put anymore paintings around the house no matter what, and besides, anything else will just be ignored.
