In the public library is where she spent many Sunday afternoons and she would read every dog book and magazine she could find. Her first dream was to become someone who is able to show dogs in trials and dog shows, a professional dog handler. Most of her time when she was 13 was spent in dog shows where she drew and sketched the animals. When she was 16 a friend encouraged her to begin painting with oils and to do a few dog portraits.
Yes she was able to paint abstracts, landscapes, sea scapes, and other subjects rather well but she decided to select this specialty of hers. She knew her decision was the right one when she was able to make and sell a number of dog portraits early on in her career. Many of the early portraits were of dogs belonging to members of the family. Then a local pet shop put up a notice about her paintings and displayed a picture she had done of their own Boston terrier.
Two paintings are credited by her for a large measure of her progress. The first painting was of charlie black which is a captivating little mongrel restored to health and adopted as a mascot by the animal humane association. She can also make portraits of other pets like horses when requested by people. Help from her husband comes in tangible and psychological forms. For her he made a specially designed table that holds her paints and brushes. Whenever she shows her work, she uses the specially crafted easels and display stands she made and stained herself. Her largest portrait ever was a three by four foot portrait of a Labrador.
Longer coated dogs are harder to paint than the smoother ones. Never does she pose the dogs. Holding its head just right is impossible for dogs. It takes her an entire hour to observe the animal and from this she remembers its typical stance not to mention its sheen and the color of its coat plus the personality or character traits that it shows. She is rather talented as people say in recording such traits onto a canvas.
The owners provide the snapshots she uses. She can also take the picture herself and blow it up on the screen if the owner cannot provide her with one. What she does is let the people she paints for choose backgrounds and the like. Sometimes, one chooses sceneries and then others choose plain ones. It is because of family commitments that she only does a portrait per month. Aside from taking vacations, she also catches up with her housework.
