Divorce Doesn’t Have to Ruin Your Family

It is no surprise to many that America’s divorce rate is hovering around 40%. Many theories exist as to the cause of this high rate, but there is no clear cut answer. Although it may seem like there are few options, there are. It’s not always easy, but there are steps you can take to make your marriage the best it can be, or at the very least have an amicable divorce.

If you are still in the beginnings of a relationship, take your time to really get to know the person. In the “honeymoon” period of most people’s relationship is when they are most gullible to agree to marriage. The true test of your love is how you communicate and function when one member of the couple never does the dishes or another member leaves their clothes strewn about the room. More importantly is how you function as a couple when faced with big decisions such as, career advancement, going back to school or moving.

When you do get married, sign a prenuptial agreement. Although the prenuptial agreement has received a bad rap due to ugly celebrity divorces, it can be very effective in many marriages. By deciding what to do while you’re still in love, if the day comes where your relationship ends you will have saved yourself years of pain later on. Attempt to maintain a level head when making your contract of what looks fair for you both. If you are worried about the what if’s, put them in the agreement. For example, if you worry that your spouse will cheat on you, have a clause placed in the agreement as to what will happen in that event. The pain and suffering you will endure if you go through a divorce will be lessened if you have a provisional plan on how you will divide things between the two of you. When there are no more reasons to fight on, it will be easier for both of you to accept the fact of break up and focus upon moving on.

Regardless of how you view counseling, giving it a chance may actually help save your marriage. Even couples that have the best communication have their persistent issues. Discussing issues with a third party who is able to give an objective point of view will greatly strengthen the bond in your relationship. Doing couples therapy before marriage may help you determine how strong the relationship will be in a marriage, potentially saving you a lot of heartache in the end.

Being open about the state of your relationship to your spouse and your children is extremely important. It’s important to make sure they know that your marriage is secured and bonded with strength. If your relationship is failing, you are not in love anymore, or you want to split for other reasons, tell them gently. Going to family counseling as well as being offered for them to go to solo counseling to work through their emotions. You should try formulating a plan in coordination and then see how a parting can impact each one of them keeping in mind the people they will stay with or the manner in which they will make things work out If the end of your marriage is thrust upon them at the last possible moment, tensions will rise and feelings will be hurt.
