nearest countryside of london?
hi can anyone please tell me which is the nearest countryside from london? or a place with landscape where i can go within 1-2 hours by train…planning my weekend with my boyfriend…i am new in london…thank you
Firstly I sugest you get hold of the ‘Time Out Book of Country Walks’ This describes country walks
in places easily reached by train from London. Each walk has a full route description and map.
The main areas of beautiful countryside near London are the Surrey Hills www.surreyhills.org
The area is criss crossed by railway lines, and you can go on great walks from places such as Dorking and Gomshall. The Ordnance Survey Landranger maps available from large bookshops like Waterstones or www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk cover the whole country on a large scale and show all
public footpaths and named walking trails Sheet 187 ‘Dorking and Reigate’ covers much of the Surrey Hills including the splendid walk from Dorking to Leith Hill (The highest point in south east England) along the footpath called the ‘Greensand Way’
Another area near London which is fabulous for walking is the Chiltern Hills www,chilternsanob.org
Catch a train from Marylebone Station to Wendover and follow the ‘Ridgeway’ footpath to Tring in one direction
or Princes Risborough in the other – both are on railway lines to and from London Ordnance Survey Landranger Map 165 Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard.
The South Downs are a national Park north of the south coast covering a large area of East and West Sussex and Hampshire. They are traversed by the South Downs Way National trail and you could find a new walk every day on the South Downs, such is the number of beautiful paths. You might start by taking the train from Victoria Station to Amberley and walking from there in either direction along the South Downs Way.
