Boating With Your Dog – Safety
Wherever you go, does your K9 go with you?For many dog owners, their dogs go where they go because they are a part of their family, whether it’s on their motorcycle, in their tent, and of course, on their boat. At face value, boating with your dog seems a safe and amusing activity; however, it can be rather dangerous for your dog. While boating, here are just a few tips to practice dog safety.
Life jackets are an essential . The sad truth is that many dogs drown each when they shouldn’t have, although this may seem like an obvious statement. Your beloved dog might not tell you even if he could because he wants to please you, but he can’t let you know when he’s getting tired . The difference between life and death can be made with a well-fitting life jacket.
Life jackets for dogs come in every size imaginable, from tiny toy dog size to Great Dane size. Make sure it has at least two clasps around your dogs trunk and one around the neck to keep the jacket snug. To pull your dog back onto the boat, handles on the back are useful.
Ensure you dog prefers the water and that they can swim. Contrary to common opinion, many dogs cannot swim. Have you ever seen a bulldog in the water?They will sink like a brick. Many other breeds are unable to swim and dont like being in the water.
You should gradually introduce your dog to the idea of boating. Moving boats can be disconcerting to a dog, and besides, they might not want to wear a life jacket. Let them wear their life jacket at home and give them treats before you introduce them to the boat. Don’t leave the shore the first time your dog is on the boat. Let them get used to the motion of the boat on the water and just let them roam around on board.
Make sure you have ample fresh water. Pure air and sunshine will make your dog thirsty, not to mention the exercise. You should have lots of fresh water on hand to deter your dog drinking from the lake. Waters polluted with Blue-Green algae is toxic , so it is very hazardous to your dog.
Both water and air temperatures should be monitored. If a canine’s body temperature becomes too low and they become hypothermic, they can die from hypothermia, just like humans. While air temperature may be too cool, it can just as well be too hot. Some dogs can sunburn and its urgent if youre out on a hot and sunny day to make sure they have a place to evade the suns strong rays. A dog having light skin and short hair should have sunscreen put on.
Here’s a few other considerations to ponder dog boating safety
Have you studied about where your dog will go to the bathroom? A proper place to go to the bathroom on the boat will be needed if your are not going back and forth to shore. Also, just in case, you will want to take along a first aid kit for your dog. Lastly, make sure to keep your dog out of the way of other boats and watercraft. A brightly colored PFD may help other boats notice your dog in the water but its not worth the chance.
You can take your dog with you on your boat. Merely taking a few precautions , a bit of planning, and a little additional time to make sure your dog is cosy on the boat and on the water can go a long way. You can go boating and still keep your dog safe . Have a great time!
