The Kangaroo Saving Australian Surf Hero
A kangaroo that would otherwise have drowned was saved on a beach in Australia by a brave local.
Local surfer and general extreme sports enthusiast Neil McCallum spotted an object out to sea that he had never seen before. It kept disappearing under the surface and moving very erratically. As he took a closer look it became apparent that it was a young kangaroo in the water, an animal not known for being seen in the water. Neil thought quickly and grabbing one of his trusty surfboards he headed out to see if he could help the poor creature.
When he arrived at the spot where the kangaroo was he saw that it was fatigued. It had been fighting against the waves and the current for quite some time and didn’t have much energy left. Niel did make an attempt to hoist the animal up onto his surfboard, but the kangaroo wasn’t very happy with this and jumped back into the sea. A number of people in kayaks were also in the area but not close enough to help. After Neil realised that this wasn’t going to work he got the kangaroo tight against his board and holding on firmly he rode the waves back to shore. Thankfully both arrived back at the beach in one piece, albeit a little shaken up.
Experts are at loss as why the kangaroo thought it could swim, although they have named him Ian, after their national swimming champion Ian Thorpe. “Kangaroos are definitely not known for their swimming abilities” states Harry Kernel of the Queensland Nature Park. He continued to say that kangaroos would only ever enter water to escape a predator or if they knew its depth was lower than their chest, but perhaps this one was a bit simple.
Ian is now back to full strength and has been eating well at an animal shelter close by. His keepers are happy to release him back into the wild shortly and hope that his experience will put him off swimming for a good while. Modesty is something that Neil seems to have bucket loads of, passing off his actions as nothing more than “paddling out and bringing the poor fella back where he belongs”.
