Animal portrait painting is just the same as human portraiture with the exception that animals hate to pose. Capturing the animal’s attention the entire time is a challenge for an artist. She gathers photos of the dog from the owner, and also asks the owner if it is possible to duplicate the pictures for her collection. Next, she focuses on what pose and what composition would be best suited for the photograph. The latter is chosen based from the type of dog or animal. She stayed in a duck blind and made sketches just for the portrait of one Chesapeake Bay retriever.
She believes that animals have viewpoints regarding something, just like humans. One story that shows how true this was was when an American pointer snuck up behind an artist and then chewed up her painting. It took a large amount of medication to treat the dog after that incident, so the painting must have really not appealed to him.
A portrait of a beagle or basset has a scenery blended in with a paw print and the kennel club’s identifying symbols would be on its back. She even made abstract backgrounds, done with the aid of her own dog’s paw. Cooperation is not something animals frequently show.
