I’m new to watercolors, suggestions?
I am taking a watercolor media class at my college and am quit a talented artist with drawing. I have little to no expirience with water colors and am having trouble with the wetness of the paper. I want my lines to be straight and not flood to the sides of the line I paint. Any suggestions? I know that the colors moving to where the water is is a fundamental feature of watercolors but for a peticular abstract I am doing I want straight lines. Should I paint my shapes with water first on dry paper then paint with the color?
I’ve painted watercolor for about 10 years, I took a college course, then took lessons at the instructors private studio, the one most important thing, and i find true is that you HAVE to have the 300#cold press paper, it’s the most expensive but it’s totally well worth it, if you paint wet on wet, exactly where you put the first layer of water, then add color, will not leak or pool at any particular area. I’ve tried to buy cheaper paper but was so frustrated, you think well i’ll buy this to practice, but your practice can be your masterpiece! Also, less is more with watercolor, just a scant amount of color at first, when the paper is wet you can add other colors to let it blend but it will never go over the line of water with the better paper, and if needed you can always add color but once you add too much color, you can never get it back, I stress small amt’s of color in layers until you get your desired affects. GOOD LUCK! p.s. if you already draw that’s the hardest part for me, then after your drawing (light lines) all you have to do is add the color, wet on wet, is beautiful, but when you’re nearing the end you can detail more color over the already dried paper, it doesn’t take much at all to make a darker level…wow now i want to go paint!!
